The Lowest Area on Earth
A verse was revealed that became a reason for some polytheists to embrace Islam regarding the matter of the Romans and the Persians. A battle occurred between the two, where the Persians triumphed over the Romans. The Persians, being fire-worshipers, defeated the Romans, who were People of the Book (Christians). The polytheists rejoiced, as they shared a commonality with the Persians in idol worship, while the Muslims were saddened by the defeat of the People of the Book. Allah then revealed verses to console the believers and refute the joy of the disbelievers:
“Alif, Lam, Meem. The Romans have been defeated in the lowest part of the land. But after their defeat, they will overcome within a few years. To Allah belongs the command before and after, and on that day, the believers will rejoice in the victory of Allah. He gives victory to whom He wills, and He is the Exalted in Might, the Merciful. [This is] the promise of Allah. Allah does not fail in His promise, but most people do not know. They know what is apparent of the worldly life, but they, of the Hereafter, are unaware.” (Quran, Ar-Rum: 1-7)
The phrase “in the lowest part of the land” not only indicated geographical proximity but also the lowest point on Earth, referring to the Dead Sea region. This verse served as a prediction and a challenge to the disbelievers, as it promised the Roman victory within a specific timeframe, no longer than ten years.
When this verse was revealed, one of the disbelievers approached Abu Bakr and said mockingly, “Look at what Muhammad says: that the Romans will defeat the Persians.” Abu Bakr replied confidently, “He speaks the truth.”
Seven years later, during the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah, the Romans indeed triumphed over the Persians, fulfilling Allah’s promise. This miraculous event strengthened the faith of the believers and led some polytheists to Islam, realizing that such a precise prophecy could not have been made by a human. It was a testament to the divine origin of the Quran.
Scientific Confirmation of the Lowest Point on Earth
Sheikh Abdul Majid Al-Zindani recounts his meeting with an American professor of geology, Dr. Palma, who brought with him a model of Earth showing detailed elevations and depressions. Sheikh Al-Zindani pointed out the Quranic verse stating that the area where the battle occurred (near Jerusalem) is the “lowest part of the land.”
The professor initially argued, citing other low-lying areas in the Netherlands and elsewhere, but when he examined the model, he was surprised to find that the Dead Sea region indeed holds the title of the lowest point on Earth’s surface. He acknowledged the accuracy of the Quranic statement, saying, “It is true! This is indeed the lowest part of the Earth.”
This confirmation serves as evidence of the Quran’s divine knowledge, as it contains information that could not have been known at the time of its revelation.
